Becoming, Not Performing

Becoming, Not Performing

Lately I’ve been thinking about how easy it is to slip into performance.

Not always in obvious ways, but in the small, quiet moments—
how we present ourselves, how we speak, how we carry our lives in front of others.

It can become so natural to focus on how things look
rather than what is actually being formed within us.

But when I come back to Scripture, I’m reminded that God has always been more concerned with the heart.

Not the outward appearance.
Not the image we try to maintain.

But the quiet work happening beneath the surface.

“with modesty and self-control”
— 1 Timothy 2:9–10

There is something deeply grounding about that.

It shifts the focus from performing to becoming.

From striving to alignment.

From pressure to peace.

Because when our lives are rooted in Christ,
we don’t have to constantly manage how we are perceived.

We are simply invited to walk faithfully,
to live gently,
and to grow steadily in who we are called to be.

This is something I am still learning.

Not perfectly.
Not all at once.

But slowly, and with intention.

And maybe that’s the point.

Not to perform,
but to become.
